If you live in the metro and you adore flowers, then the University of the Philippines might have something in store for you. University of the Philippines plants thousands of sunflower seeds along University Avenue during summer. They bloom in time for the commencement exercises and has become an annual tradition.

Sunflower, or Helianthus, is a genus of more than 70 species in the Daisy family, Asteraceae. Compared to the common daisy, just look at how massive the bloom is. In the Philippines, they are called Mirasol, which is a Spanish word.  Mirasol loosely translates as mira or look and sol which means sun. Sunflowers do look or face the sun for optimal growth. So noticeable how all the blooms are pointing in a particular direction.

The stalks can grow to more than 5 feet. Just look at how tall the stalks are! (or how short I really am)

I look at the sunflowers and I see not just blooms, but also hope especially these trying times. I am truly grateful the University of the Philippines kept up with its tradition. The vast open green space of the University of the Philippines provide fresh air and cool space for recreation and leisure.
